A Brief History of
St Petersburg, Florida
Situated on the Gulf Coast of Florida, St Pete offers plenty of sunshine year round, which makes it a great spot for outdoor activity and tourists.
In the 1830s and 40s people began moving to the Tampa Bay Area to set up homesteads and raise animals. It was in 1875 that John Constantine Williams moved to Tampa from Detroit and bought the land that would become St Petersburg. It was not until 1888 that Williams transferred part of that land to an exiled Russian aristocrat named Peter Demens.
Legend says that they flipped a coin to see who would name the city. Demens won the coin toss and named the city after Saint Petersburg, Russia. But it wasn't until 1903 that the city incorporated with just a few hundred people. The rest is history.
